Use Vintage Textile For Home And More

By Patricia Williams

Every few years, colors and patterns in fashion change and sometimes they may come back for a new generation. Then there are some who do not follow trends but like to keep some items around for as long as possible. A vintage textile can bring a unique look to any wardrobe or living space.

Many consider patterns from yesteryear to be classics that never go out of style and have a multitude of uses. For instance, small hounds tooth patterns are great for jackets or suits for either gender. Only because it may not be found at a store, it does not mean it would be inappropriate for work.

Other patterns like hounds tooth or plaid can liven up most business attire, however some patterns are not appropriate for every environment. Busy designs or vibrant colors can be a nice blast from the past and may be worn sparingly if one works in a conservative environment. Yet those who work at a nightclub or in a place where self expression is more accepted may be able to get away with an entire outfit.

For those who want to experiment, there are many do it yourself craft projects that allows anyone to create a customized look. This is ideal for anyone who wants to use bold vintage prints as accents instead of the main focus. These can be used to create appliques on clothing, or as a trim for home objects such as a picture frame.

People who like to sew should have many ideas as to how retro textiles are used. In little time, they can create a simple skirt or a top to be worn casually, or come up with an entirely different creation. This is also a good way to extend a wardrobe without buying something that others have in their closet.

Some home projects may only call for fabric glue and pair of good scissors. Simple ideas may include making a border for a picture frame, functional art, or window trim. If one does not have access to a sewing machine, there are some items that will benefit from hand sewing, followed by a drop of glue for lasting wear. Online tutorials can demonstrate how this can be done in minutes.

Like any other fabric, care and maintenance is important. This holds especially true for delicate textiles or those that are light in weight. While some heavier or synthetics may be able to handle machine washing, going to a professional or hand washing is recommended. It is best to be informed before making a purchase.

Buying classic textiles for home and personal use can be a unique experience. Though some people do this regularly, others have enough creativity to create a look not found anywhere else with just a little imagination. Instead of following what others are doing, they can become trendsetters. Sometimes buying retro fabrics and repurposing can also save money versus always buying something new.
